Meet Princess – a sweet, loving, beautiful, 15-month-old Shepherd/Collie mix. She was surrendered by her owner to Tails of the Misunderstood Canine Rescue Society, and she’s looking for a forever family. For the next four weeks, I am fostering her and teaching her proper manners with other animals as well as humans.
Princess arrived yesterday. Throughout the day, I allowed her to explore her new environment and start getting to know Glimmer and Violet. She was kept on the leash to give her a sense of security, to teach her boundaries, and to control her if she presented any problem behaviors towards the other two animals. She was very curious about her new environment, and she was very good about giving both Glimmer and Violet respect and space. She did show a little too much interest in what they were eating at supper time, but she responded very well to a calm but assertive vocal correction and returned her attention to her own food.
Princess is still being house-broken. Considering the highly stimulating day she had yesterday, she did a great job of doing her business outside. She had no in-house accidents.
There are a number of things that Princess needs to learn [such as not taking food off counters or the table], but so far, she’s been responding very well to light corrections. As the week progresses and she starts to relax and get more familiar with the house rules, we’ll see if this continues to be the case.
Stay tuned for more of Princess’s journey to find a forever home. And remember: Stay calm and lead on.
